  2. Presentation

Within the multidisciplinary nature of teacher training, the knowledge provided by Educational Psychology is essential for understanding and analyzing student change processes, especially within the educational context. This psychological knowledge equips future teachers with tools to interpret and analyze their educational environment, enabling them to design and plan teaching and learning situations autonomously and creatively.

Teachers must not only master curricular disciplines but also learn how to intervene in teaching and learning situations by understanding the principles underlying various procedures, methods, and techniques, ensuring their practice is solid and well-founded. In this regard, it is vital for future teachers to understand that continuous professional development is a responsibility and a duty for every educator, and that the initial and basic training they currently receive is only the beginning of a lifelong learning process.

The Educational Psychology course, taught in the first year during the second semester, is a core subject in the degree program, as it provides a major portion of the psychological training necessary for the teaching profession. This subject is part of a block of courses (including Sociology, General Didactics, and School Organization) aimed at explaining the educational phenomenon from an interdisciplinary perspective. Educational Psychology builds upon Developmental Psychology and is indispensable for understanding the approaches of the various disciplines that students will study later in their degree.

  4. Contents

    1. Theoretical contents

Block 1: Conceptual and theoretical aspects of Educational Psychology

Theme 1: Psychology and Education: Educational Process and Psychological Development

This topic aims to study the relationship between the development process (studied during the first semester) and the educational process. The goal is to understand that while maturational processes condition the capacity to learn, education and the learning it enables are, in turn, a source of development. It is therefore Educational Psychology that takes on the challenge of understanding and explaining under what conditions the learning promoted by education generates development. From this perspective, we believe students can attach meaningful relevance to both disciplines.

Block 2: Teaching and learning models

Theme 2: Learning models and theories and their educational implications within the current curriculum.

Learning is considered a central pillar of the educational process. The aim is to introduce students to the main learning theories addressed within Educational Psychology: behaviorism and cognitivism, highlighting the most representative authors of both. We will primarily cover Bandura’s observational learning and constructivist approaches to learning, emphasizing, in particular, the educational implications that these theoretical models have generated..

Block 3: Intrapersonal variables affecting the teaching and learning process

      Theme 3: Learning strategies

Learning strategies are highly relevant to the teaching-learning process. The importance of this topic lies in the fact that these strategies (mental operations or activities) facilitate and develop the various learning processes in school. Unlike study techniques—which target rote memorization rather than meaningful learning—strategies allow students to process, organize, retain, and retrieve the content to be learned. Furthermore, they serve to plan, regulate, and evaluate these same processes based on the task objective. In this topic, we will address learning strategies as a means to explain effectiveness in the teaching-learning process. To do so, the content will cover the conceptual definition of the term, the various existing types of strategies, assessment methods within the school context, and teaching procedures for strategies as an educational goal to be achieved.

Theme 4: Intelligence, creativity, and learning capacity

In Psychology, most research on intelligence can be summarized into two fundamental approaches: psychometric theories, which study individual differences through the study of factors (Spearman, Thurstone, Guilford, Vernon), and theories focusing on the dynamic aspects of intelligent behavior, which attempt to understand human capabilities in terms of the basic mental mechanisms underlying intelligent conduct, as noted by Sternberg.

Two theories stand out in this section: Sternberg’s triarchic theory and Gardner’s theory of multiple intelligences. Both authors mark a qualitative leap in intelligence research, as they interpret it as a system related to both the internal and external worlds of individuals. From this perspective, intelligence is not singular; rather, it is understood more as a set of skills capable of improvement and development, instead of an entity fixed in advance and forever (Beltrán, 1996).

Additionally, the framework proposed by Mayer and Salovey (1990, 2001) and Goleman (1996) will be presented, which addresses a new approach to intelligence: emotional intelligence.

Finally, we will cover the topic of creativity as an effective tool for both students and teachers in problem-solving. The goal of working on this topic is to reflect on the importance of creativity in the educational environment. We will reflect on the definition of creativity and the four approaches (person, process, product, and environment) that have contributed numerous elements to research on the subject.

Theme 5: Motivation and the affective dimension in the learning process

It is increasingly evident that explaining the teaching and learning process solely from a cognitive dimension has its limitations. Currently, various studies point to the importance of examining educational processes as experiences that engage individuals as a whole. In this regard, this topic will address the motivational, affective, and emotional factors that play a major role in the development and outcomes of the teaching and learning process. The topic will begin by explaining how and why individuals initiate actions directed toward specific goals, the intensity with which they engage in an activity, and how they persist in it—including why students lose interest and stop putting forth the necessary effort for a task. Following this, we will cover affective, emotional, and relational variables: self-concept, self-esteem, causal attributions, and expectations.

Block 4: Interpersonal and contextual variables of the teaching and learning process

Theme 6: The assessment of learning and teaching from the perspective of Educational Psychology

The aim is to outline the purposes and characteristics of assessment in the primary education stage. The different types of assessment and the various strategies that can be used to implement it will be presented, proposing the necessary instruments for observation and assessment. It will also cover the influence that the type of assessment has on the teaching-learning process, as well as how to communicate this assessment to the recipients: fathers, mothers, other teachers, and the students themselves.

However, educational assessment cannot be reduced exclusively to the task of evaluating the student; it must also include the teaching process carried out, the type of intervention, and the activities proposed in the classroom. From this perspective, assessment must serve to orient student learning and to guide the teaching promoted by the teacher, within a single process where teaching and learning are two sides of the same coin.

      Theme 7: Educational interaction: teacher/students and student/student.

As already pointed out in previous topics, the constructivist explanation of learning refers to the student's constructive mental activity, which connects prior knowledge with new learning. From this perspective, it is the student who learns, and no one can take their place.

However, this learning situation takes place within a context shared with other students and the teacher. It is precisely the teacher and their actions—their way of intervening—that will determine whether the student's activity is more or less constructive. From this point of view, the teacher is understood as a mediator and promoter of the learning process. On the other hand, the students themselves can exert a major educational influence on their peers, playing the same mediating role assigned to the teacher.

In short, this topic aims to explain how both the teacher and the students themselves influence and impact school learning.

    ASSESSMENT

Article 135.1.v) of the Statutes of the University of Murcia, Article 8.6 of the Student Assessment Regulations (REVA), and Instruction SG 18/2026 of the General Secretary of the University of Murcia interpreting these rules apply to the assessment process. This instruction is available at this link: https://sede.um.es/sede/documento/normativa/instruccion-del-secretario-general-sg-18-2026-sobre-la-interpretacion-y-aplicacion-del-art-135-1-v-estatutos-umu/24199.pdf. Students are also reminded that Article 22.1 of the Student Assessment Regulations (REVA) stipulates that "any student who engages in fraudulent conduct, including the improper attribution of identity or authorship, or is in possession of means or instruments that facilitate such conduct, will receive a grade of zero in the assessment process and, where appropriate, may face disciplinary action following the opening of a disciplinary file."

To pass the course, students must achieve a minimum of 5 out of 10 points, and must score at least 50% of the weight in each of the assessment indicators (SE1, SE2, and SE6).

If a student needs to use the rescheduled exam session (convocatoria de incidencias), the exam may be multiple-choice or short-answer, as determined by the coordinating professor of the group.

If a student, due to unforeseen circumstances covered by Article 8.6 of the REVA, cannot complete the continuous assessment, they may take a comprehensive assessment (prueba de evaluación global). The comprehensive assessment will consist of a theoretical-practical exam that ensures the acquisition of all learning outcomes (100%) [See details for each group below].

In the academic term in which this course is taught, there is no right to retake continuous assessment activities, except in the cases covered by Article 8.6 of the REVA. Students who—due to unforeseen circumstances—have not participated in the continuous assessment may opt for the comprehensive assessment through a theoretical-practical exam that ensures the acquisition of all learning outcomes. This exam will be divided into: (1) an objective test to assess the degree of acquisition of the theoretical content of the course (50%), and (2) one or more practical case studies to assess the degree of acquisition of the practical skills of the course.

Students who pass the course are reminded that "This right—the right to a retake—does not mandate a retake when the student has undergone continuous assessment and passed it, without prejudice to the faculty's authority to offer this option when deemed appropriate."

For students who have NOT passed the course, the continuous assessment grades (SE3 and SE6) will be kept for subsequent exam sessions until the course is taught again, unless a retake is requested. In the exam sessions following the one in which the course is taught, students may request to retake the assessment systems regardless of whether they passed them. The option to retake must be exercised by sending an email to the course instructor within 5 days following the publication of the exam call on the Virtual Classroom (AV). The SE3 assessment system will be retaken by submitting the "practical dossier" (groups 1, 3, 4, 5, 9, and Z) or "challenges" (group 2) through the "Tasks" tool within the deadlines specified in the call published on the course site (AV). The SE6 assessment system will be retaken through a critical reflection activity on the development of the course. [See details for each group below]

    COURSE TIMELINE:

Students will have access to a timeline in the Virtual Classroom, which will be progressively updated.

    ABOUT THE METHODOLOGY:

Teaching innovation resources and tools may be used in the course to improve student learning.

Additional material for the preparation of practical activities will be provided in detail. These practical activities are subject to the academic calendar.

This course is directly linked to Sustainable Development Goal 4: Quality Education.

SPECIAL EDUCATIONAL NEEDS: Students with disabilities or special educational needs may contact the Diversity and Volunteer Care Service (ADYV - https://www.um.es/adyv) to receive guidance on making better use of their learning process and, where appropriate, for the adoption of equalization and improvement measures for inclusion, pursuant to Rectoral Resolution R-358/2016. The handling of information regarding these students is strictly confidential, in compliance with the Personal Data Protection Law (LOPD).

    SPECIFICATIONS FOR GROUP 1

    • Retaking continuous assessment: Students can retake the exam as well as the activity dossier. To retake the activity dossier, they must complete a series of parallel activities related to the content of the practical sessions.
    • Retaking criterion SE6 will consist of a reflection activity on the various activities carried out in class, their contribution to student learning, and a personal assessment.
    • The comprehensive assessment contains theoretical-practical content. It is a mixed exam containing multiple-choice questions, short-answer questions, and a case study analysis.

NOTE: Students who decide to retake criteria they previously passed will keep the new grade obtained in the current exam session.

    SPECIFICATIONS FOR GROUP 2:

    Comprehensive Assessment (Group 2)

Pursuant to Instruction SG-18/2026 on the interpretation and application of Article 135.1.v) of the Statutes of the University of Murcia and the Student Assessment Regulations (REVA), students who opt for the comprehensive assessment modality will complete an assessment equivalent to the continuous assessment. This is aimed at verifying the acquisition of the same learning outcomes and competences planned for the course.

The comprehensive assessment will include activities equivalent to those developed during the continuous assessment and will consist of the following assessment systems:

    • Individual written test (60%): assessment of the theoretical and practical contents of the course through objective-response questions, development questions, and analysis of educational situations.
    • Individual Challenge-Based Learning (CBL/ABR) project (30%): the student will develop an individual project equivalent to the one completed during the continuous assessment. To do this, they will select one of the proposed challenges, ground the analysis in current scientific evidence, interpret the problem from the perspective of Educational Psychology, design justified educational proposals, and write an academic report. In place of the interview conducted during the continuous assessment, a practical case or documentary material will be provided to assess the same learning outcomes and competences.
    • Individual reflection and analysis activity (10%): aimed at assessing the ability to integrate course content, justify decisions made, and reflect critically on the teaching and learning process. This activity replaces the continuous assessment based on participation and monitoring of the work developed during the semester.

The project and reflection activity will be graded using the same criteria and rubrics applied in the continuous assessment, adapted to the characteristics of the comprehensive assessment, ensuring equivalence in the level of demand and the evaluated learning outcomes.

    Retaking Assessment Activities (Group 2)

Retakable assessment activities will be conducted through the same activities planned for the comprehensive assessment modality, ensuring the assessment of the same learning outcomes, competences, and assessment criteria established for the continuous assessment.

The grade obtained in the continuous assessment systems will be kept for subsequent exam sessions until the course is taught again, unless the student requests to retake it.

Students who have not participated in the continuous assessment, or who did participate but did not pass the course, may opt for the comprehensive assessment under the terms established in this syllabus and in accordance with Instruction SG-18/2026 and the Student Assessment Regulations of the University of Murcia.

    SPECIFICATIONS FOR GROUP 5

    Comprehensive Assessment Group 5

    • Resolution of equivalent practical activities (30%): the student will perform individual activities equivalent to those developed during the continuous assessment. The grading will use the same criteria applied in the continuous assessment, ensuring equivalence in the level of demand and the evaluated learning outcomes.
    • Individual reflection and analysis activity (10%): aimed at assessing the student's ability to integrate the practical contents of the course and relate them to future teaching practice. This activity replaces the continuous assessment based on participation and monitoring of the work developed during the semester.

    Retaking Assessment Activities Group 5
