  2. Presentación

Design of Didactic Units for the Primary English Classroom

This is a compulsory course within the English Specialization track. The aim is to enable students to:

    1. Understand the components of a didactic unit based on the principles of the task-based approach to foreign language teaching, and to analyze how this approach helps teachers organize and sequence content to ensure English language learning in the primary classroom.
    2. Understand the components of a didactic unit for foreign language teaching following the principles of CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning), and analyze how this approach assists teachers in organizing and sequencing content to support the learning of other subjects—such as mathematics, natural sciences, and social sciences—in English in the primary education context.
    3. Explore and learn to apply various teaching strategies available to primary English teachers to foster more effective learning among students. Students will become aware of when and why to use each strategy, depending on learners' age, level, interests, and other characteristics.
    4. Critically analyze teaching sequences and didactic units in current English textbooks and in CLIL-based materials used in primary education. Students will identify weaknesses or issues and compare them with current teaching and learning theories. The goal is to prepare them to adapt and modify content and activity sequences based on the needs of their future students and learning objectives.
    5. Design didactic units in small groups, applying the approaches and strategies studied throughout the course. A strong focus is placed on ensuring coherence and progression in the sequencing of activities, enabling primary school children to successfully carry out a final task freely and autonomously—whether oral, written, or multimodal—in real-life, meaningful contexts.

To ensure success in this course, students should have an excellent level of oral and written competence in English. It is essential to take the courses Teaching English in Primary Education and Design of Didactic Units simultaneously, as they are closely related and serve as preparation for the School Teaching Practicum.

    OBSERVACIONES DEL EQUIPO DOCENTE

    1) Methodology

This course has a clearly practical orientation, and students are expected to complete assigned readings outside of class. Class time will be devoted to the explanation of content, discussion and debate based on readings, clarification of doubts, and the development and presentation of group activities, which may be completed outside of class when necessary.

Students will work in groups of up to five and also individually. They will be required to prepare and present a series of tasks either in class and/or in written form to the instructor, focusing on the topics being addressed in class.

Both the group work and individual participation and contributions will be assessed. The course aims to promote a highly participatory methodology in the classroom.

    2) Assessment Requirements

The final grade will not be calculated unless the student has obtained at least 40% of the assigned percentage in each assessment component.

A final grade of 5 out of 10 is required to pass the course.

3)Notes regarding the possibility of resitting Assessment Systems (AS): During the assessment period in which the course is taught (Assessment Period II), students are not entitled to resit the continuous assessment systems corresponding to Assessment Systems AC3 and AC6, except in the cases provided for under Article 8.6 of the REVA. In such cases, the overall assessment will consist of a final individual written examination (50%), an oral presentation and the critical, well-founded resolution of a practical case (10%), and the submission of a portfolio (40%). The marks obtained for the continuous assessment systems will be carried forward to subsequent assessment periods until the course is offered again, unless the student requests to resit them. In assessment periods following the one in which the course is taught, students may request to resit Assessment Systems AS3 and AS6 that they have not passed. Students wishing to resit these components must notify their intention through the “Apúntate” tool on the Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) within five days of the publication of the examination notice on the VLE. Assessment System AS3 will be resat by submitting the required coursework through the “Assignments” tool within the deadlines specified in the examination notice published on the course site (VLE). Assessment System AS6 will be resat by means of an oral presentation or another assessment determined by the lecturer. This assessment will take place on the date indicated in the examination notice published on the course site (VLE).

    4) Spelling and Language Accuracy

The spelling criteria approved by the Faculty Council will be applied: https://www.um.es/documents/d/educacion/criterios- ortograficos-facultad-de-educacion

    5) Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

This course is directly linked to SDG 4: Quality Education.

    6) Field-Based Activity

One of the assessable activities (participatory approaches to reading English texts) may take place in a primary school. In such cases, university students will be required to travel to the school to complete the activity.

    7) Assessment of Participation

Participation must be active, voluntary, and frequent. The quality of participation will also be considered.

Mere attendance does not contribute to the final grade.

Participation in specific activities proposed by the instructor will be taken into account.

Completion of weekly tasks is required to follow the course effectively.

Observation-based assessment will include records of participation, task completion, meeting deadlines, and contributions to forums.
